Why You Should Love Online Ads
In
general, internet users despise online advertising. Between all the display
ads, pop-ups, and 30 second video advertisements, it is difficult to avoid
building this hatred for ads on the internet. However, I think it’s time we
take a step back and realize these advertisements aren’t just there to enrage
us. They actually do have a purpose!
Online
advertising is a good way for businesses to do anything from familiarizing
their brand, to pitching sales to online shoppers. Although some have
questioned its effectiveness, internet advertising is a growing market that
businesses all around the world continue to spend large amounts of money on.
Which brings me to my point, without the revenue provided from online
advertising, websites such as Google, Yahoo, and Facebook wouldn’t exist!
Basically
without those dreadful little 30 second ads before YouTube videos, there would
be no website to provide you that video in the 1st place. In 2011,
96% of Google’s revenue was from advertising. 95% of Facebook’s total revenue
was provided by advertising in 2010. Could you imagine the internet without any
search engines or social networking websites?
It’s not just the big name sites that live on advertising
revenue. No matter what website you are looking at, the ads are providing the
resources to keep it up and running with fresh content. So next time one of
those pre-video ads provokes anger, or a pop-up tries to ruin your day,
remember that those advertisements are what makes the web such a beautiful
thing.
